Starting therapy can feel like a big step. The process is designed to be straightforward, supportive, and at your pace. Below is an outline of what typically happens from first contact, to starting sessions, through to preparing you for life after therapy.
To begin, you’ll be invited to complete a short referral form. This helps me understand a little about what you’re seeking support with and whether working together would be appropriate.
Once you submit the form, it is automatically emailed to me, and you will receive a confirmation email to let you know it has been safely received.
I will review your referral to consider:
Whether your needs are within my scope of practice
Whether I have current availability to offer you support
I will then contact you to let you know whether I am able to offer therapy. If we are a good fit, I will invite you to a free 30-minute initial phone consultation.
This consultation is a relaxed, no-obligation conversation where we can:
Briefly discuss what you are hoping to gain from therapy
Go over what therapy might involve
Answer any questions you may have
Plan practical details, such as when and where sessions would take place
If you decide to proceed, you will be sent a copy of the Welcome Pack, which is also available on this website. This outlines important information about therapy policies, confidentiality, boundaries, and practical arrangements.
You will be asked to read and sign the Welcome Pack before your first session, so that everything is clear and agreed from the outset.
Payment is requested within 48 hours of booking your first session. This confirms your appointment time while giving you some breathing space before committing fully to therapy. Following your free 30-minute initial consultation:
Individual sessions: £110 per 50 minute session
(The average fee for a UK Clinical Psychologist is around £130 per 50 minute session)
Because therapy is often reviewed for helpfulness after the first six sessions, I also offer a discounted block option:
Block of 6, 50 minute sessions: £600 total
(Equivalent to £100 per session)
How many sessions someone finds helpful varies greatly and depends on individual needs and goals. There is no expectation to commit beyond what feels right for you.
Research suggests that the approaches I primarily use — including CBT and EMDR via video call — can be effective for many people experiencing mild to moderate mental health difficulties, with meaningful progress often seen within approximately 6–16 sessions.
This flexible approach allows you to:
Review progress regularly
Choose the number of sessions that feels most helpful
Balance therapeutic benefit with what feels affordable and manageable for you
For face to face sessions, we will meet at the beautiful Georgian 1-2 Lemon Villas on Lemon Street Truro, which is a five minute walk from two central car parks and ten minute walk from Truro train station. For video sessions, I will send a secure link for us to meet online.
Once therapy begins, we will take time to build a shared understanding of you and what you would like from our work together. Early sessions typically focus on getting to know you in a meaningful and respectful way, while ensuring therapy feels safe and supportive.
We will talk about your strengths and interests, and where possible, we will look to incorporate these into our therapeutic approach. Alongside this, we will explore your current difficulties, any previous experiences of therapy, relevant personal history, safety information, and your hopes and goals for therapy.
We may use a range of creative and reflective approaches to help understand what has contributed to your current difficulties. This can help us make sense of patterns, experiences, or challenges, and identify how to build on your existing strengths while working through difficulties step by step, together.
You may be invited to take part in home practice between sessions. This involves applying ideas or skills from sessions to everyday life. Any home practice is always optional and is used as a way to support learning and insight, which we can then reflect on together in sessions.
You can also choose whether you would like to review your progress using evidence-based questionnaires that look at symptoms and wellbeing. Some people find this helpful for tracking change, while others prefer not to use formal measures. This choice is entirely yours.
As therapy progresses, we will regularly reflect on how helpful the work feels and adjust our approach as needed. When you feel you have gained what you need from therapy, we will plan for ending our work together thoughtfully. This includes developing a “staying well” plan, so you feel supported to continue building on your progress and successes beyond therapy.
If you have any questions at any stage, you are very welcome to ask. Therapy works best when the process feels clear, collaborative, and supportive from the very beginning.
“You’ve changed things for me, things I never thought would change in my mind and body”
“You’ve shown me that I have the strength inside me to heal, to mourn, to accept love plus love back and you’ve shown me that I can do it all in a healthy way”
“Thoughts and emotions rise to the surface safely in the calm and supportive setting Meg provides. The guided structure of the sessions is really helpful to get to the bottom of what’s been going on in your mind and causing challenging patterns and behaviours"
